Ian McLean Announces Candidacy for Smithfield Town Council in the November 2026 General Election

Smithfield, RI — Ian McLean has announced that he will be a candidate for the Smithfield Town Council in the November 2026 general election. McLean currently serves as Chair of the Budget and Financial Review Board (BFRB), where he has worked to support responsible fiscal oversight and provide residents with clearer insight into the Town’s budget processes.

McLean stated that he is running to support responsible budgeting, increase transparency for residents, bring qualified leadership to the Town’s decision‑making process, and help ensure Smithfield is positioned for long‑term stability and success. He also believes the Town needs a clear, responsible path for locally controlled growth—both residential and commercial—to ensure development aligns with community needs and maintains Smithfield’s character.

He noted that strong local government is built on three core pillars that reach every resident: education, public safety, and public works. In his view, these areas form the foundation of a healthy community, and responsible leadership requires balanced, sustainable support for each.

Areas of Focus

Accountability and transparency in municipal spending
McLean supports strengthening oversight of how appropriated funds are used and improving public access to budget information.

School district funding
He believes the school district has faced operational funding challenges and that additional support is necessary to maintain educational quality and long‑term outcomes for students.

Business climate and responsible growth
McLean believes Smithfield should remain welcoming to businesses while planning growth in a locally guided, measured, and sustainable manner.

Background

McLean has lived in Smithfield for 12 years. He and his wife have been married for nearly 18 years and together for 26 years. They have two children who attend Smithfield Public Schools. He holds an MBA from Bryant University and has served as a youth softball coach in Smithfield Girls Softball League and Rhode Island Storm.

McLean noted that he is running as an Independent because he believes local officials should represent the interests of the entire community rather than any particular party. Over the coming months, he will continue to share information about his candidacy and encourages increased communication and collaboration with residents. He believes that open discussion about Town operations and community needs contributes to more effective and transparent local government.
